Game of Thrones: Season 3 (2013) - ★★★★½

Stars: Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, Michelle Fairley, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Richard Madden, Alfie Allen, Rose Leslie, Gwendoline Christie, Natalia Tena, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (and many more amazing actors).

Where to start with Season 3? It's bloody brilliant of course, but that's to be expected. I guess you could say that the story just keeps getting better and better. I found myself more interested in this season than any other before it. Everything is still top-notch, especially the acting. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was a little disappointed in this season. It's still the best show I've ever seen, but Season 3 lost a little bit of the spark that ignited Season 2 and Season 1. It's not necessarily the show's fault, but the story lacked the epicness of the previous seasons. (However, it had an ending that shocked me. It was beyond words).

If you've seen Game of Thrones, you'd know that the story is too grand to write in simple words. I'm going to skip the re-cap and just tell you what made this season absolutely amazing.

My favorite story of this season goes to.... Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). They were hilarious together, providing the comic-genius of the season. Season One had Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon, Season 2 had Tyrion and Cersei Lannister, and this season it is Jaime and Brienne that take the cake! I found their relationship extremely interesting, even touching in the way that their respect grew for one another. It is the most unlikely pair, but they outshone the lot of them in my opinion.

Jaime and Brienne shine in Season 3.
My second favorite story you ask? Well that's easy. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie) are my favorite couple in the history of the show. In this season you see their relationship grow and many 'aww' moments happen. They have magnificent chemistry, and it's awesome to see minor characters rise up and take the spotlight.

Every time I see these two, I can't help but say "Awwww."

You're inquiring as to what my third favorite is? Oh, well I'd have to say Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) still shone above the rest. He's always funny, always intelligent, and always interesting to watch. I love seeing him banter with his dysfuntional family. The Lannister's are pretty fucked up I must say.... and that's why we love them!

You know who really let me down in this season? Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). She is building her army and making some pretty powerful connections, yet I found her almost forgettable in this season. STRANGE I KNOW! She went from being most interesting to almost uninteresting in a matter of episodes! There were some pretty cool scenes I will admit, but I guess her character just didn't really grab me like it used to.

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) still had one of the most interesting stories. She has some funny moments with The Hound (Rory McCann), but nothing substantial really happens. In fact, nothing substantial really does happen in this season until the 9th episode.

In this season, I was shocked even more than I was at the end of the first season! That 9th episode just took my breath away. It's easily the most memorable moment in the season, and it would have to be in the Top 3 in Game of Thrones history. All I have to say is that Michelle Fairley, who played Catelyn Stark, gave the most stunning performance. She blew me away, sealing her character to the confines of my memory forever.

Overall, I loved this Season to death. I found myself counting the days until the next episode came on. Even though I was a little disappointed, it's still better than every other TV show I've seen recently. The quality of acting, story, and set-production has not dropped at all since Game of Thrones aired. It is rising up the ranks to receiving the title of 'Greatest Show of all Time.'

  1. Having read the books I feel that Season 3 suffered slightly from the weakness of the source material, in regards to it being a base for a TV show. The first book had most of the characters in a few concentrated stories. The second book scattered some of them and the TV show had more storylines to follow. By the third book there are probably a couple dozen storylines - something that just doesn't make for good TV. The show dropped some of them and fleshed out others. There's not much they can do with the fact that almost every character has their own arc other than to replace some newly introduced book characters with existing show characters, like the Melisandre/Gendry arc.

Unfortunately, books 4 and 5 continue to fracture the stories so the show will, if anything, get even more separate.

    1. They probably did the best they could with the source material, but that didn't make it as riveting as S1 for me. I'm still a bit confused as to why they don't just introduce some of the new characters (they have a big enough budget for it). I think the popularity of Gendry is what made them keep him too. People had high expectations for him, like he'd become some kind of Robert Baratheon or Ned Stark, and he'd run away and marry Arya.

Doesn't matter, still an epic show :) haha
